OAR launches development to map facilities producing PPE

In an effort to make data on facilities manufacturing PPE freely available in an organised and consistent manner, the Open Apparel Registry (OAR), a US-based neutral, open source tool mapping garment facilities, has announced that the company launched a development in which users can upload and search for information on PPE manufacturing.

The initial set of data, researched and gathered together by the OAR team, has been pooled from a variety of sources including: the Nation of Makers and Find the Masks collaboration; BRAC’s university’s Mapped in Bangladesh Rapid Survey initiative; the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), India; the IDH PPE Dashboard [in process]; and contributions from the OAR community.

PPE facilities contributed to the database range in size, from small studios to large manufacturing units. Unlike other entries in the OAR, PPE facility profiles include additional information on product type, as well as contact details for users to make an enquiry directly. The OAR team has not conducted an assessment of the quality of the PPE products manufactured at each facility users of the data will need to carry out their own due diligence checks.

The OAR team is calling for additional datasets to add to the registry. Contributions can include: referrals and introductions to groups compiling this information; links to data sources / sharing datasets; and direct outreach from facilities manufacturing PPE, sharing the necessary data points

The OAR team will do the work to check and compile the data for upload to the OAR.
